The services provided by WWCUK
At WWCUK we know first-hand the difficulties faced by Portuguese and Spanish speakers in the UK, especially those from African communities.
Language barriers and lack of access to mainstream services and information about benefits, entitlements, law and legislation cause significant problems. If not addressed, stress and mental health issues caused by experiences in a person’s country of origin can lead to isolation and longer-term damage.

This service is designed to strengthen the relationship between parents and children. It also provides advice, information and referral to appropriate agencies. This services are linguistically and culturally tailored to the community we serve.
WWC liaises with social services and schools. Many parents in the community are always seeking our advice on how best to cope with family issues. Occasionally it organises workshops on family issues where guest speakers from other agencies are invited.

Welwitschia Welfare Centre helps clients to get to know about their employment rights in the UK. They are given information regarding holiday entitlements, pensions, sick leave, maternity leave and unfair dismissal.
It also helps clients on job search, interview techniques and tips and referral to employment solicitors. We organise workshops and seminars on employment where United union representative is invited to give a talk and very soon it will be liaising with Jobcentre Plus.

Many people within the community are in need of community care. They are excluded in some way from participating in social and community life. These people are socially isolated, lonely and discriminated against. To this group belongs; mental health and HIV sufferers, disabled and elderly people.
Befriending provides companionship for isolated people, the chance to develop a new relationship and to participate in social activities. This is true to those community members who have lived in institutions.
Volunteers befrienders are recruited within the community. They meet clients usually once a week for a minimum of one hour. All volunteers are subject to CRB checks. The activities include; sitting and talking, going shopping, cinema or watch sport of interest of the client. Time to time, Welwitschia does receive referral from social services, hospitals requesting volunteers to befriend someone in need.
